Jodrell Bank Radio telescope

An hour from here, the radio Jodrell bank radio telescope recently opened new visitor centre and today was my first vist since the 1970s. The visitor centre is very kid-friendly almost at a cost of providing resources for others who might want to spend the short time they have there using the 'big stuff' for their own use.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the visit on a bright sunny day when the roads were REALLY quiet with most others watching a wedding.

Here is a couple of images - Fox-Talbots image of a window at Lacock Abbey one of the earliest images in 1835 - its in Wikipedia and the page is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Latticed_window_at_lacock_abbey_1835.jpg

The other image is mine taken in 2010 and the window is in the picture. Thanks for your work Mr Fox-Talbot

Summer Wiltshire holiday

Had to be done.. Stonehenge - never mind all the stuff they write about it - its probably the duty of all islanders to walk around to look and think on what out forebears did so long ago.

Whether your genes have been here since before it separate from the rest of Europe mainland or came here last week - its a place to go. Not as big as you expect - but special.

Summer 2010 Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge, a long-time tourist valley - busy noisy and narrow. The 'village' of shops has some nice things to see - though almost every spare space has some shop wanting to sell something.

Summer 2010 Mungo in the window

Mungo goes bird-spotting

April 2010 Marconi day on the radio

Telford and District Radio Society, which I'm a member of, ran a special radio station amongst many others around the world in memory of Guiglio Marconi and his work on radio tranmission develpoment in early 20th century. I took my small radio and home made antenna up to Tywyn in North Wales to set up in the locality of where Marconi actually set up his station. The main group was by his old radio buildings (now homes) and myself, John and Richard (& son) went up a nearby hill to where Marconis' antenna mounts were and put up the fishing rod-20meter dipole aerial I put together (fishing rod, pound-shop speaker cable, a CD-r holder and coax.. sorted!) .

Here's a photo of Richard (M1RKH) s 4WD and them with the radio on the concrete antenna mounts put there by Marconi. We made 7 contacts on digimodes a GB8MD

Feb 2010 Radio contact to Grenada

I contacted another radio amateur who was in Grenada - that place that probably the only part of Britain that America has recently invaded.

He sent me an eQSL - an electronic document that is like a postcard which is a confirmation from him that we made contact - the details on are it. It's quite colourful.
