Visit 71.10N

KQ21VE that's over 71Deg North

Nordcapp - quite a serious journey from the dock to the tourist centre - this was through some desolate landscapes, your wouldn't last long walking in these temps -10 or much less in the wind. The 2 coaches had a snow plough in front, just in case.

I took my old gps with me, and in the frezing wind on the cliff top at Nordcapp took a reading. I'd left it set to the 'Maidenhead' standard - a standard used by ham radio - my home is IO82SP - this is a lot more North. KQ21VE - ignore the trip settings but the time is correct 12:08 and yes, its dark. I see plenty of pictures of that area in the Summer, people camp and stay up there - one crazy guy drove all the way from mid Europe somewhere to Nordcapp on a stacker truck apparently. Out short visit soon ended and again, no messing, the buses left. The Polarlys had a schedule to keep.

More in the next one.

Cruising with post and freight - Hurtigruten way pt2

Gales in the north made the going a tad rough - plenty of sea-sickness, but the one and a half hours of daylight gave some wonderful views of the fjords and short visits to small places which made you realise life in the north revolved around transport. Here is a photo of some views.

Apologies for the slight shake - its darker than it looks and the Polarlys was moving along quite quickly. On the right is a typical stop-off, looking from the foot of the steps off the boat. This is Nordcapp - the most northern bit of Europe, nothing more north till the pole - except ice and sea.

Norway Christmas & New year 2009 pt 1 Troms.

It took three flights from Birmingham (BHM) to Tromso (sorry I can't make this editor use the correct 'o' BHM to Copenhagen, ..to Oslo on to Troms. This Hurtigruten cruise at probably the wrong time of the year, but I hoped to see the northern lights - Wishing for it made the lights not appear..

First day was in Troms - the weather way grey and wet - about the same temp as the UK. Oslo was much colder despite being lower lattitude. We had a look around old town - then walked past the Nerstranda Senter - a shopping centre much the same as everywhere else in western world - warm/dry and more fashionable goods on sale After - Suddenly a demo in support of the Palestinians collected - the terrible situation which proves that loaded dice will always make the ordinary human the loser.
Here's some photos - a passionate event - worth being part of..
